Bananas Foster originated in New Orleans in the early 1950’s when Owen Brennan, owner of Brennan’s Restaurant, challenged his chef to include bananas in a new dessert to promote the popular imported fruit from South America. The final, flambéed delicacy was named for Richard Foster, the chairman of the New Orleans Crime Commission and a friend of Owen Brennan. Today, Bananas Foster is served at Brennan’s and other restaurants throughout New Orleans.
